Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a therapeutic modality that helps individuals understand the thoughts and feelings that influence their behaviors. CBT is rooted in the idea that our thoughts, emotions, and actions are all interconnected, and by changing negative thought patterns, we can change the way we feel and act.

CBT is used to treat a variety of mental health conditions including depression, anxiety disorders, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and eating disorders. Because of its adaptability and strong track record of successful outcomes, CBT is one of the most-commonly used forms of therapy worldwide.

Read on to discover if CBT is right for you, and how we use CBT to treat mental health challenges at our outpatient rehab programs across New England.

How We Use CBT in Tewksbury & South Portland

At Pillars Health Group, we use CBT in both our Half-Day & Full-Day Outpatient Treatment Programs. Both programs offer individual and group CBT sessions. In individual CBT sessions, one of our expert master’s-level therapists will work one-on-one with each client to explore personal triggers, negative thought patterns, and behavioral responses. This personalized approach allows for deeper self-exploration, and tailored strategies to target the client’s unique needs. It’s especially beneficial for individuals dealing with severe depression, trauma, or anxiety where privacy and focused attention are critical.

Our group CBT sessions bring together like-minded individuals facing similar challenges, like substance use disorders, anxiety, or mood disorders. These sessions offer a supportive peer environment where participants can share experiences, practice skills, and learn from each other. Group settings can help reduce feelings of isolation and stigma, which are often associated with mental health challenges.

Both formats emphasize identifying cognitive distortions, building coping mechanisms, and preventing relapse. These skills make CBT an integral part of our outpatient treatment offering.

Is CBT Right for You?

Deciding if CBT is appropriate depends on each client’s personal goals and challenges. CBT can be great for clients looking for a structured, goal-oriented therapy—one that focuses on present problems and solutions.

CBT may be a good fit for:

  • …short-term, solution-focused therapeutic approach
  • …anxiety, depression, or PTSD
  • …identifying and challenging negative thought patterns
  • …a structured, evidence-based method with clear goals
  • …developing practical tools to manage stress, emotions, and relationships
  • …creating motivation for working on homework assignments between sessions
  • …support in building self-esteem and emotional resilience
  • …preventing relapse and long-term issues

My experience at Pioneer Behavioral was an important part of my journey toward recovery. Going into treatment, I was going through a difficult time in my life, and taking that step was not easy. I’m grateful for the opportunity to focus on myself, work through what I was experiencing, and begin moving forward. The staff made me feel welcomed and extremely knowledgeable.

From the beginning, Erlene was the first person I spoke to. She has provided an enormous amount of help and support over the last few months. Real reassuring while she also makes you feel like you’re not alone and not just interacting with somebody who’s on the clock, you can tell she takes her career seriously. Also Link, Elena, Dawn, & Bella have been nothing short of amazing to work with. Pillars is extremely lucky to have the people they do. I don’t regret coming here one bit and honestly believe my life has improved since meeting this great community.

100/10 the most amazing place to go to. I was in near crisis last year and I came here for mental help, they assisted my process being on PFMLA which was a life saver, genuinely!!! I absolutely love the staff in this facility, so much so that I have actually returned this week!! SHOUTOUT to Arlene who hit me up over text to check-in on me and she’s insanely good at getting honest answers out of me😂 she’s an absolute wonderful vibe and I’m very thankful she contacted me!! HUGE SHOUTOUT to Candace, one of the wonderful therapists there who I’ve been thankfully able to reconnect with IS THE BEST!! She really matches my vibes and is very human🩷🩷 Josh is such a cool dude, fun guy and a nerd who understands the way I speak! Holly is such a wonderful hippy vibe who gives good hugs and listens to all my banter!! Mary is a sweetie pie who usually steps in whenever I need her if my girl Candace isn’t around! I love the whole staff, but I just needed to specifically shout out some baddies!! FULLY RECOMMEND anyone to come to this place if you ever are in need of help, whether it’s mental help or potential substance, this place is absolutely amazing and I cannot stress that enough!

Erlene was wonderful to work with as an admissions coordinator. She was kind, understanding, and empathetic. She really took the time To listen and let us know she was there to support us. She was very helpful and knowledgeable, walked us through the process and explained the program options. Erlene made this challenging process much easier for us.

I may not have ended up committing to the process, but I wanted to leave a review for Arlene. I had reached out for the first time ever for assistance and even though what they offer at pioneer wasn't what i was looking for Arlene was understanding, helpful, and genuinely an easy person to talk to. I usually find myself far to anxious to reach out to anyone for any reason. little lone having to tell someone I've changed my mind. But here I felt none of the common fears. I 100% can say Arlene helped me feel; safe and confident in reaching out. And i know who to contact if i need to in the future!
